Wireless Internet access via a mobile phone can be implemented in different ways, but the open Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) has made mass use of the mobile Internet possible.
An important advantage of using a cellular terminal rather than a computer is that the user is identified with a very high degree of probability. This makes it possible to avoid the registration procedure and to personalise the information received to the greatest possible extent.
As for the Softline WAP portal (http://wap.softline.kiev.ua), it offers the company's employees and clients the following capabilities:
· remote access to the corporate portal;
· online notification of new correspondence and full access to e-mail;
· mobile client access to information on the status and progress of projects;
· prompt coordination of employees working at customer sites, on business trips, on holiday, etc.
A wireless (mobile) terminal has a number of technical limitations, and the need to overcome them led to the emergence of a family of new standards known collectively as WAP.
Clearly, the pace of WAP service development will be linked to growing demand for them, which in turn depends on how quickly the infrastructure of Ukrainian business takes shape. For now, WAP in Ukraine is developing more because of the internal logic of technological progress. A real mobile Internet market may emerge only in a year or two; meanwhile, the technology is ready to be tried by the most demanding and educated users, and we have quite a few of them, both in the company and among our customers.
