Last week San Francisco hosted the Ukrainian IT conference "Ukraine Tech Gem", aimed at promoting Ukrainian startups. It was the first time Ukraine had held a conference of this level in Silicon Valley. The event was attended by representatives of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on Informatisation and Information Technologies.

"The IT industry and its representatives are the vanguard of the modern world; they are our future. Given the level of the event and the importance of the development of the Ukrainian IT industry, we delegated a conference participant from the relevant parliamentary committee. All travel expenses were covered by the event participants themselves so as not to draw on the state budget at such a difficult time for the country," noted Valerii Omelchenko, Chairman of the Committee on Informatisation and Information Technologies. "One of the main objectives at this conference was to establish contacts with US educational institutions in order to raise the level of knowledge of our IT specialists and to exchange experience on educational programmes between universities."

According to Valerii Omelchenko, during the conference negotiations were held on the possible establishment of an institute or school in Ukraine to train specialists in various IT fields.

"We are considering the possibility of creating programmes to train our students in California in the form of training programmes, summer schools, an institute, postgraduate or doctoral studies. Ukrainian IT business is ready to provide grants to students to study in the United States of America on condition that the specialist will eventually work in Ukraine. We also want to reform our education system in information technology and programming in line with world standards," summed up the Chairman of the Committee on Informatisation and Information Technologies.
